Mammoth Nordic Application

The Mammoth Nordic Snow Park located near Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center, in Mammoth, California, is a US Forest Service park with year around use, such as, hiking, biking, skiing and snow shoeing, to name a few.  The area features approximately 9 miles groomed trails for both classic and skate skiing. The Mammoth Nordic Club grooms the trails approximately six nights per week from December 1 through March 31 as well as maintaining the facilities, organizing cross country races and events.

The Mammoth Nordic Application was designed to provide accurate up-to-date information to the park users which would allow them to make decisions about where and when to use the park, determine distances or conditions of trails, current weather, detailed trail terrain map and learn more about the Mammoth Nordic Foundation who ultimately supports the club.
The application is available on the Android Market.

Features of version 1 are as follows:

The application is easy to use, when launched it will display the conditions tab first, you can then press other tabs as you like.  For pages with extra content you can use your finger to scroll around, pinch to make smaller etc.  you can exit the application by pressing your home button or pressing the back key.  Any comments or enhancements you would like to see in the application feel free to contact me and I will discuss them with the Mammoth Nordic Club.

For the next release I am working on added a Google Map option.  The Club bas all the trails stored in a Google Earth format which I would like to embed into the application so you would be able to see the map and trails from the Google Earth perspective, this will be really cool!

Android Applications by Ron

Android application development is a hobby for me.  When Android first came to the market I was very excited that the framework would include open source projects and a Java platform.  My first application was never placed on the market but used as a learning experience to allow me to fight through making various activities function on the Emulator.  It was a great experience and from then I was hooked on the concept and searching for potential projects.
My "full time" day job consists of application development and application support for a very intense system that uses a variety of technologies, such as IBM System I, running DB2 and RPGLE to Linux servers using JBoss server, Jboss open-source framework for Web interface and web services.
My Application development philosophy is simple and agile as follows:
  • Gather Customers requirements, site URL's and graphical images
  • Generate Mocked-up application layout
  • Review layout with customer
    • Establish priorities of features to release schedule
  • Develop Beta version
    • Review Beta with customer and field test
  • Publish first version
    • Gather feedback
    • Start on next version
    • Schedule next release date
  • Publish next version
  • Continue development of all features
Please feel free to contact me regarding Android, Java or even RPGLE development, I would love to discuss these technologies with your or help you with your projects.
